37. Pseudosasa japonica (Steud.) Makino

Local names

English- Arrow bamboo

General description

P. japonica is a vigorous and tough, spreading, evergreen bamboo to 6m in height, forming a thicket of olive-green canes with copious narrow, shiny green leaves to 25cm in length. It prefers moist or wet soil. It makes an excellent screen or container plant. Pseudosasa japonica is also quite happy indoors. The leaves, 5 to 13 inches long by 1.75 inches wide, are much larger than the leaves of other hardy bamboos of similar size. The culm sheaths are persistent. This is also one of the best bamboos for a windy or seaside planting. Although Pseudosasa japonica is a spreading bamboo, this hedge shown in the first two pictures is 20 years old and has not spread under the sidewalk.

Uses

This is definitely an architectural bamboo that can be shown off as a specimen plant or used for privacy hedge and windbreaks in landscaping. Pruning to a node will produce two culms growing out from one and create a dense evergreen hedge to the height you want.
